The best 1 day experience in Faro
Faro as the capital of the Algarve region, a beautiful versatile city in the south of Portugal, has a lot to offer. Faro is a new destination for tourists with a typical Portuguese city atmosphere, a combination of interesting monuments and traditional Portuguese character. As a coastal town it offers warm sunny weather during a big part of the year, beautiful beaches, traditional bars and restaurants with delicious seafood. Faro attracts people for many different reasons, everyone can find their own passion here. Let’s use this one day in Faro to the maximum. Down below you can see two options for a 1-day trip around the beautiful city of Faro. |
Option number 1 |
"It's a magical place." All the roads lead to the Marina, a beautiful place in the city centre of Faro and also the starting point of this 1-day adventure in Faro. When you get here to explore, the first thing that you will notice is the Faro sing, a typical tourist stop. Near the sign you can see a statue of a woman with a shell instead of her head resting on the stairs leading into the water. Then you can cross a small road and you will arrive at the Jardim Manuel Bivar, a picturesque square with shady seating and landscaped green areas, a garden with different types of trees and well-designed, well-kept flower-beds. This area is considered the centre of the city, integrating one of the main part of the Historical Centre of Faro. |
"History is no mystery." After enjoying the city centre, it's time to head to the old town. Cidade Velha, the historical old town, is divided into two main areas: the Vila-Adentro, the oldest part; and the Mouraria, an area where the Moors settled since the and of the thirteenth century. If you are trying to find your way to the old town, it is good to walk through Arco da Vila, a monumental neo-classical arch with the remains of the original Moorish wall. Then you can roam around within the Muralhas de Faro, a wall with pre-Romanesque origins that encircle the old town. They were beefed up, and later restored twice during the Moorish period in the 9th and then the 12th century. If you enjoy a walk around old town, you will definitely encounter the Faro Cathedral, also known as Sé Catedral de Faro or Igreja de Santa Maria. This monument was opened in 1251, just two years after Faro had been “reconquered” from the Moors. The cathedral was built over the ruins of an ancient Roman temple having been a mosque during the Arab period and converted into a cathedral after King D. Afonso’s III conquest. |
Festival F If you’re planning to visit Faro during September, maybe you will be lucky and the streets will be full of music from Festival F. The festival turns the streets of the historic city centre into one of the best music festivals in the country. For three days, the best national artists perform throughout the night in a farewell to another fantastic summer. |
Option number 2
|
Coffee time! If you are a fan of the beach, maybe this second option of a day trip in Faro will be more suitable for you. You can start your day with a visit the Marina, where you can look around and see the Faro sing, walk through the pedestrianised shopping streets, the scenic plazas and the various restaurants and bars where you can enjoy your breakfast. Then it's time to head to the beach. |
Praia de Faro There are plenty of options to choose from the bus, bike, ferry, taxi, Uber, Bolt or if you really like to walk, you can enjoy a 2 hours long walk. If you like surfing or want to try it, there is also the possibility to arrange some surf lessons on the Faro beach, the surf schools will borrow you all the necessary equipment. When you arrive at the Faro Beach you can see the Ria Formosa, a beautiful coastal lagoon. If you are a nature lover, you can take a walk around the park located in front of the beach or you can explore the beach itself. The beach is situated on the ocean side and stretches for about 5 kilometers. There is a path that follows the beach in both directions and is lined with Portuguese holiday homes and small beach bars, where you can enjoy a nice cocktail or delicious dinner while admiring the view over the ocean with the slowly setting sun. |
#sunsetlovers Both of these days are best to be finished with returning to Marina and enjoying a little bit of the nightlife in the streets, have a nice dinner, make a pleasant conversation with some friendly locals and become a fan of local artists while they are performing live in some establishments or in the marina. The city is full of life and action in the night, so why not join and enjoy as well.
